A set of new fleeces has struck the right note with a popular community band whose audiences have included Royalty.
Run entirely by volunteers, the Swinton and District Excelsior Band has 70 members that span an age range from primary school to eighties. They offer free taster sessions and music lessons and the chance to play in the training and senior bands.
Membership is free with all costs covered through fundraising or grants, with band secretary Tracey Popham saying this helps to ensure music is available for all.
“We have some families with three or four members coming along. If we were to charge, I think it would result in some people missing out,” said Tracey.
The band was formed in 1936 in the village of Swinton near Malton and has become a focal point for the community. Recently they were honoured to play in front of King Charles and Queen Camilla and have received the prestigious Kings Award for Voluntary Services.
As they prepare for a new season of engagements, they have put a grant from Broadacres Housing Association’s Community Development Fund towards the cost of new fleeces and polo shirts for the training band.
“To come along and learn how to play and then be able to be part of the band gives a sense of achievement and putting on the same uniform makes you feel proud and part of the team,” said Tracey.
“As well as learning a new skill, being part of the band boosts social wellbeing and helps people avoid isolation.”
