Broadacres recently visited Hambleton Foodshare in Northallerton to find out more about their day to day operation. They cover areas in North Yorkshire such as Stokesley, Great Ayton, Northallerton and Bedale and has been supporting local families for over 11 years. Each month, they distribute around 650 food parcels, helping those facing financial difficulties.

With an average £3000 weekly spend, they allocated over £100,000 for food in the 2023/2024 period alone.

The Foodshare provides tailored food parcels, considering dietary requirements and certain preferences. It is run by 85 volunteers and 3 part-time staff who support in picking up donations from shops, making up food parcels and help with any admin related tasks.

Partners like Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons are crucial to their operation. They also receive amazing donations from CAW Ingredients including drinks and toilet rolls, ABP Wessex donate lots of frozen meat and pets at home provide them with food for dogs and cats.

Why people need the Foodshare

The majority of food parcels are given out due to the cost of living crisis, with 51% of families needing support due to rising expenses. The Foodshare often sees an increased demand during school holidays, when families face higher childcare costs, and from households affected by long-term sickness or unexpected financial expenses.
