In the finest Strictly traditions, a Yorkshire village will continue to Keep Dancing, thanks to a grant from Broadacres.
Each week residents of Eggborough and surrounding villages gather at the village’s cosy Methodist Chapel to put their best foot forward and enjoy line dancing sessions. It’s one of the many activities that take place in the Chapel which has become a vibrant hub for the community.
Chapel Treasurer Brenda Oldfield explained: “We have many elderly people in our village who live alone. Since our major renovation project ended in 2015, we have done our best to prevent loneliness and isolation by hosting events and activities.”
These include “Coffee, Cake and Movie”, where a recent film release is shown, Welcome Space on a Wednesday afternoon where people can join in with dominoes, scrabble, quizzes or just have a chat and on Thursday’s a coffee morning which can attract over 45 people.
Line dancing on a Tuesday has proved one of the most popular sessions with a core of 20 people in regular attendance with a professional dance teacher taking them through their steps.
The grant from Broadacres has ensured the sessions can continue throughout the winter and into spring.
“We’re really pleased to have secured the grant. Many of the participants are in their eighties and the sessions mean a lot to them,” said Brenda. “It’s all about music, exercise and leaving with a smile.”
The Broadacres Community Development Fund supports local organisations, groups, and projects in areas where Broadacres has homes. All grants are approved a Panel consisting of Broadacres’ residents.
