A community-based grant is ensuring that a group of young footballers from North Yorkshire can continue to grow – in more ways than one.

In 2022 Huntington Rovers started up an under-10s team of girls from local primary schools to the North of York which has now grown to a squad of 14 members.

Now all at secondary school, the girls have outgrown their original team kits. They set about fundraising for a new strip and a £200 grant from the Broadacres Community Development Fund has helped them reach the £700 target.

“The girls have worked so hard to improve their skills and it’s great that they will now all look the part for the new season,” said team fundraiser Faye Laverack. “Walking onto the pitch with your friends all in the same new strip helps team bonding and gives such a boost to confidence.”

Faye says she is delighted that girls are now able to participate in far more sports such as football.

“It was something I never had when I was young so it’s great to see girls now getting this opportunity,” said Faye. “Of course, to provide that opportunity we still need volunteers and sponsors to step forward which is why this grant from Broadacres is so welcome.”

The Broadacres Community Development Fund supports local organisations, groups, and projects in areas where Broadacres has homes. All grants are approved by the Association’s own residents via a voting scheme using tokens similar to how Tesco award grants in its stores.
