As well as boosting its collection of books thanks to a grant from Broadacres Community Development Fund, Ainderby Steeple Primary School near Northallerton has created a comfy sofa reading area in the school library.

And an outdoor storytelling area complete with circular seating and canopy means children can also get some fresh air whilst enjoying reading outdoors.

Friends of Ainderby Steeple School Treasurer Nicky Ruddick, said the move is part of a drive by the school to improve phonics and reading skills.

“We noticed the interest in reading was waning in recent years especially in years 3 and 4. At home now young people do everything on an ipad or other screen and reading does not feature as a hobby or pastime,” said Nicky.

“It’s so important in terms of language and other development to encourage reading skills and this is an area our new head teacher is keen to focus on.”

The outdoor area is also seen as particularly beneficial to children for whom a traditional classroom can pose a challenge.

“If you have a child who has difficulty regulating their emotions in an enclosed environment creating an outdoors area can assist. There’s more space and greater opportunity for quiet time and reflection,” said Nicky.

“School budgets are always tight so any additional funding of this nature is very welcome and put to very good use.”
