Case Studies:
Crakehall Primary School
A North Yorkshire village school aims to boost focus in the classroom by encouraging children to burn off energy in the playground.
Crakehall Primary School is using a £200 grant from Broadacres’ Community Development Fund to provide scooters for pupils to use during breaktimes as part of new project to get children active.
“It’s very important to ensure children get used to enjoying the outdoors from an early age, not only for the obvious physical benefits but also the boost to mental health that fresh air, communication and releasing all that energy can bring.” Said Claire Glover, Grants Secretary of Friends of Crakehall School.
Walking Football in Stokesley
Walking football sessions set up in Stokesley by ex-professional footballer and Consultant Occupational Therapist, Janette Hynes MBE, has attracted a wide range of people – including many men and women aged from 18 to 70+.
They proved popular and Janette successfully applied for a £350 grant from Broadacres to fund a pitch at Stokesley Leisure Centre to allow further sessions to be run at a low cost to participants.
“The beauty of walking football is that it is very low impact, so you can play no matter what level of fitness or physical challenges. We have players who have back, hip and knee conditions,” said Janette.
Encephalitis International
Encephalitis International, whose headquarters has been based in Malton for over 30 years, offers help, support and advice to families affected by encephalitis – an inflammation of the brain caused through infection or faulty immune system.
A £200 donation from Broadacres’ Community Development Fund will go towards helping to run the project in 2025. Currently there are over 400 members from North Yorkshire on their database with 227 local cases recorded in the past five years.
“We want to show people they are not alone, support is available and there is life after encephalitis diagnosis,” said Joanne
