A charity set up to meet housing need in Darlington will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year, and a grant from Broadacres will ensure it continues to provide extra help to the homeless and vulnerable at Christmas.
The 700 Club derives its name from an original appeal in 1994 for 700 people to donate £50 to buy a terraced house in the town to provide accommodation for the homeless.
In fact, the public response meant more funds were raised, and now, 30 years on, the 700 Club helps up to 150 people on a daily basis. A £500 donation from Broadacres will support this work over Christmas – the busiest period of the year.
“The donation from Broadacres is very welcome because it allows us to adapt what we buy to meet the particular needs of families, often shaped by their religious and cultural beliefs,” said the 700 Club Head of Strategy and Development, John Elliston.
“The donation will also contribute to our Christmas initiative to help 350 families affected by the rapid rise in the cost of living. Struggling families choose, but receive free of charge, everything required for a special meal to celebrate Christmas Day in the way they did before the financial crisis,” said John, “and there are presents for the children too”.
